2021.10.18 16:00 buildbetterbaseball How Youth Baseball Coaches Can Make the Most Out of Their Scrimmages
Here's a video version of the post if you prefer video: https://youtu.be/BSoLQkBPqQ4
When it comes to coaching youth baseball players, one of your top jobs as a coach is to assess the talent level of your players to figure out where they fit on your team. You’ll get your first look during your team tryouts, but tryouts will only show you the surface of a player’s talent. After tryouts, you can really see what a player can do when you start your practices. It’s challenging though to bring game-like situations into practice, and practice talent doesn’t always translate to game talent. What’s the best tool you can use to put your players in real game-like situations? A Scrimmage. Scrimmages are the best way to see your players in real action besides playing in an actual game, and in today’s Bullpen Bulletin, I’m giving coaches my top tips on how to choose what type, how to set-up, and how to get the most out of your scrimmages. Now, let’s make sure you make the most of your scrimmages!
#1: Two Types of Scrimmages
If you’ve never heard of a scrimmage before – it’s basically when your team plays a game that’s not a game. A scrimmage has all the parts and feel of a real game, but it’s not a game. Most of the time, scrimmages are played before the game schedule for the season starts. The flow of the season normally starts with tryouts, then practices, then one or two scrimmages, and then the game schedule starts. It’s very possible to have a scrimmage in the middle of the season, but most coaches want to use scrimmages to prepare for the games, and once the games start, they want to save all their energy for the games.
There are two types of scrimmages that you can use to help your team prepare for the games –
1) The first one is called an Intra Scrimmage - that’s when you play a scrimmage with your own team, splitting your team in half and having them play each other like it’s a game.
2) The second one is called an Inter Scrimmage – that’s when you find another team who wants to scrimmage, and you play them like it’s a game. You can work with the other coach and make special rules for this scrimmage, and you can even get an umpire to work it for you. This type of scrimmage is the closest you’ll get to an actual game.
Both of these types of scrimmages are fantastic for getting your team ready for games. Your pitchers will practice throwing to live batters, your batters will practice seeing and hitting live pitching, your fielders will practice fielding game like ground balls and fly balls, and you’ll be able to practice your coaching as if it were a game.
#2: Goals for Scrimmages
As I’ve mentioned a few times in this video, scrimmages are meant to have your team experience game-like situations that can’t be replicated in practice. Before heading into a scrimmage, it’s important to set your goals you want each position and player to accomplish. You want every player to get as many reps as they can at their position, and if they play multiple positions, you want to make sure they get reps at every position they play. Right now, I’m going to take you through the normal goals that I set for my players when I coached to give you an idea of how to plan a scrimmage.
1) Pitchers – First, you want to make sure every pitcher has a chance to pitch in a scrimmage. Unless you have your pitchers throw to live batters in practice, this will be the only opportunity your pitchers will have to see live batters. I would have a hard pitch count limit of about 25 – 30 pitches, or 2 innings max if they have a quick first inning. This will, 1, make sure each pitcher has a chance to pitch, and 2, make sure each pitcher doesn’t throw too many pitches. I usually started with my strongest pitcher in the first inning and worked my way down the pitching chain as the scrimmage progressed.
2) Batters - Same with the pitchers, you want to make sure every player gets a chance to bat as many times as possible. There should never be a limit on the number of batters in a scrimmage, every player should hit. If you have signs, this would be a perfect time to go through ALL of the signs you have to make sure you and your players are on the same page. This will help the baserunners too. Make sure your players are stealing, bunting, hit and running, sacrificing, and anything else you can think of. If a situation, like a first and third situation never happens, make sure you set it up before the scrimmage is over – that’s what’s great about a scrimmage, you can set your own situations for your team to practice!
3) Fielders – I think the most important thing for your fielders is just to make sure that every player gets time at every position they play. Even if they don’t play a certain position, a scrimmage is a great time to try new positions. If you have a tall player who doesn’t play first base, this would be the perfect time to have him play some first base and try it out. If you have any defensive plays – like bunt plays, first and third plays, pick-off plays, make sure you practice all of them, so your team is prepared.
The best part about a scrimmage is you can set up your own situations and stop the play at any time you want. If you want to practice a first and third play, set up the situation and have them play through it. If it doesn’t work, you can stop the scrimmage and quickly explain what went wrong and how to fix it.
#3: Intra (Team) Scrimmages
I want to highlight some quick tips for when you’re having an Intra scrimmage, or a team scrimmage. First, even though this may seem obvious, make sure you plan out the entire scrimmage before you get to the field. You don’t want to have a scrimmage on the fly, making teams in the moment and trying to figure everything out without a plan written down.
Before the scrimmage, sit down and make the teams. Separate your players based on talent. Make sure the two best pitchers are on opposite teams. Make sure one team doesn’t have all the best hitters. Try your best to make it as even as possible to make it the most fun for your players. Make sure you have an even number of positions on each team – you don’t want one team to have all the shortstops or all the catchers.
Write down your rules for the scrimmage and post them in the dugout. Write down your pitch count and inning limit for pitchers. Write down the batting lineups. If you want to have a rule where you can’t play the same position more than two times in the scrimmage, then write that down. Make sure both teams know the rules and know how the scrimmage will operate before it starts.
#4: Inter (Versus) Scrimmages
In this last part, I’m going to highlight one main tip for when you’re having an Inter scrimmage, where your team is playing another team. This will be the closest your team comes to playing an actual game. As far as the play goes, nothing really changes from the previous point. Everything I just said about preparing before the scrimmage and making sure you post the rules and the lineup will apply in this scrimmage as well.
The one main difference with this scrimmage is the fact that you can collaborate with the other coach to make it the most productive use of both of your team’s time. The best case scenario is to meet up in person and plan out the entire scrimmage together, highlighting the things that are important that you both want covered. If that can’t happen, you should have a zoom call or facetime, a phone call, or at the very least a text message conversation about both of your goals you want to accomplish from the scrimmage. Make sure you cover how many pitchers you both have, how many hitters, what the rules will be, what situations you want to happen, how you want to handle lop-sided innings where one team is struggling to produce – either hits on offense or outs on defense.
Collaborating with the other coach before heading into the scrimmage will help you figure out exactly how you want to handle your team in the scrimmage. The reason you both want to scrimmage is to help your team prepare for games, so treat it that way, make sure your goal is to help each other and make the most out of the time you have with the other team.
I’d like to hear what you think about this video! Have you ever scrimmaged before? How do you like to handle your scrimmages? Leave a comment below and I’ll be sure to reply back with my thoughts!
I don’t want you to miss out on your free guide before we go! 2021.10.18 16:00 UnderstandingDouble9 GCG Starters' Guide: Main Interface and Functions
| This guide was first published in GCG WIKI. Credit: Chise Hachiroku|
Upon entering the game, you will be greeted with following interface, we call it the Main Interface. It is also the place where all the functions are guided from.
Please note that in many interfaces there exists an icon of a house that would lead you straight to the Main Interface.
Let’s take a close look at its structure, and where all the elements may lead you to.
At the top left of the interface, you may see an icon of your M.Scr Grl (Main Screen Girl), your Level and your nickname. The blue bar below the texts represents your current progress within this level. By clicking this section, you will be guided to a menu where preferences and the “Encyclopedia” section lies.
Beside you can see an icon with “PASS” written on it, touching it you will enter the ‘Battle Pass’ section where you may use merits to gain. In the final appearance of the English Version, you can see the current server’s time, which is presented in UTC-4. The date within the game would change at 4:00 AM every morning in that time zone. See Current Time…
On the left side of this interface, you can see five buttons in a column, from top to bottom they are:
Activities: Where activities, regardless of daily or time-limited ones, are shown, and related awards are claimed.
Terminal: Where you would interact with girls and NPCs through Private Chats and Moments and claim your rewards from the Command through Mail.
Notice: Where you can see all announcements made by game operators and is displayed daily when you enter the game. It is a good place to get know what is going on besides official SNS and this Wiki.
Friends: Where you may manage in-game relationships with other Managers, send/accept/refuse friend requests, giveaway/receive your energies and edit your blacklist.
Clan: Where you can participate in Guild Missions and claim rewards for your personal contribution or completed guild goals, receive daily welfare, and explore the inner city with your guildmates if it is available. If you are not yet a member of a Guild, you can choose to create one or join one.
At the bottom of this UI, you can see a chatroom on the left and four functions on the right. The chatroom allows you to communicate with other managers in public (world), private, or with your guildmates. Please note that on iOS version, the chatroom function is not available.
The four buttons, from left to right, are:
Storage: Where you can manage, use and apart your Weapons, Modules, Goods, Resources, Fragments, Gifts and other items.
Team: Where you can pre-assemble your teams (up to six) and name them, as well as managing your arrangements when supporting other managers.
Shop: Where redemption and in-app purchases are made.
Mission: Where daily tasks and achievements and listed and corresponding awards are claimed.
You can see your possession of Energy, Crystalas and Earth Coins at top right, and clicking on them will guide you to an interface where you may get more of them by redemption (uses items or in-game currency), or in-app purchases (uses real-world money).
Below the stats, there is a rotating banner and by clicking on the current banner you will be guided to corresponding page.
At the center left of the view you will see a moving and fully-interactable figure of your M.Scr Grl, in your selected cloths. By slightly clicking on the figure, you will see the banner replaced by a ‘Change’ button for 5 seconds, where you can enter the changing room page and alter your M.Scr Grl as well as the dresses girls wear.
Click the 'Change' Button
Select a girl, click on dresses to change dresses!
Click on M.Scr Girl to set her!
Last but not the least, you can see four (or five, if you have not completed the in-game guide) large buttons on center right. They are:
Girls: Where you can manage your character cards.
Cafe: Where you manage the daily operations of the cafe like arranging staff(s) on duty, making coffee, decorating hall, bedrooms, and your backyard, as well as arranging training and rests of the girls in your cafe.
Supply: This is where gachas of Character Cards and Weapons are taken place.
Fight / Attack: Primary function. It would guide you to a secondary menu where you may choose to explore main stories, do coordinated attacks, make vows with girls, or take part in activities.

2021.10.18 16:00 M1chaelLanz Anger Management
Six pairs of eyes darted back and forth from one another. They all were sitting in fold out chairs that groaned every time someone shifted their weight. The hum of the air conditioner in the window was the only sound, until Paul looked up from his phone.
"Alright, sorry about that. Had some family business to attend to." Paul said, putting his phone in his pocket. "My name is Paul and I would like to welcome you to our first session of Villain Anger Management."
All six villains focused on him, upset that he interrupted their silent game of sizing each other up. First to speak was a small, young woman with woodland creatures crawling through her vibrant green hair.
"Paul, you sure have some balls," the woman said.
Paul looked down at his crotch, smiled, and returned his focus to her, "Very observant. Good to know you have two eyes."
The other villains laughed, not expecting such a cutting quip from a therapist. The woman stood up and kicked her chair behind her. Squirrels poked their heads out of her hair and growled at Paul.
"Minions, attack!" she yelled.
Paul sprung off his chair before the squirrels left her hair. Closing the gap inside the circle of villains, he plucked a squirrel from her hair and slammed the little critter's face first into her mouth. The squirrel's tail moved like a windshield wiper, obscuring the woman's vision. She fell back onto the floor, trying to take out the giant hoagie of a squirrel in her mouth. The other villains erupted into laughter, while the other squirrels snickered among each other inside her hair.
The woman pulled the wet squirrel out of her mouth, "Argghh! You are going to pay for that!"
She wasn't talking to Paul, she was talking to the squirrel. Her grip tightened around the squirrel, which struggled in her grip. The squirrel's eyes started to poke out of its skull before Paul intervened. Paul grabbed her by the wrist. With one squeeze, her bones cracked and the squirrel was free from her wrath. His other hand went around her neck, lifting her high in the air.
"What's your name?" Paul said.
She gasped for air and her feet kicked in the air, "Elee."
"Well Elee, consider this your first lesson. Don't blame your minions for your failures," he said, slamming her to the floor.
Elee blinked her eyes a few times, trying to bring the world back in focus. When it did, she saw Paul with her minion perched on his shoulder. This made her blood boil.
"No, Elee. You are the traitor." Paul said.
"I am not!"
"You hurt your own minion, even willing to kill this furry little guy." Paul said, scratching the squirrel head. "And for what? Failing to accomplish a task?"
Paul shook his head, "Failure is not the same as betrayal. Would you consider yourself a traitor whenever you failed a task?"
Elee's rage left her body faster than it arrived. Her breathing slowed and fell silent, letting his words take hold in her mind.
"I don't know who or what hurt you in your past, but you can't go around lashing out on your family." Paul said.
"Yes. Minions are your family. Who else would join forces with you to accomplish your diabolical aspirations? Jaster?"
Elee scoffed at his comment, "Jaster can't be trusted. He's a city slicker."
"Good. So you know who you don't trust. But you also need to recognize who you can."
Elee turned her attention to the squirrel who was happily rubbing against Paul's neck. Tears started to well in her eyes, realizing her most trusted companions she was taking for granted. The squirrel jumped off Paul and scurried down to Elee's face, licking the tear from her eye.
She laughed, "Stop it Kenny."
Paul released his grip from her neck and helped her up. He went over to her chair and folded it up, "I think that is enough for our first session. The takeaway is obvious, but it's worth repeating. These minions you are killing are your family. Treat them with respect, because at the end of the day, they are the only ones you can truly trust."
The villains didn't say anything, but their faces showed his words and actions got to them. They all started to make their way out and Paul began stacking the folding chairs when his phone rang.
"This is Paul," he answered.
"You seemed to make a good first impression," a voice said.
"So you are watching my sessions? Thought you would be too busy?"
"I'm retired. I have plenty of time."
"Sure you do. If you have so much time, why didn't you stop in?" Paul asked, walking over to the window.
"But then you would have never gotten that breakthrough with squirrel girl."
"Her name's Elee."
"Do you think she is recruitable?"
"Not for you. At least not directly."
"That's never been a problem before."
"Why the sudden interest? Finally looking to settle down?" Paul said with a toothy grin.
"No, but her control over those squirrels could be useful to me."
"Always working. When are you going to stop by to visit? My wife has been dying to try a new recipe. And the kids love seeing their favorite uncle."
"...I will let you know. Keep up the good work, but don't get carried away. Don't want you turning them into heroes."
"Would that really be so bad?"
"Have a good night, Paul."
"You too, Jas."

2021.10.18 16:00 TansenSjostrom Burry's Allusion to Not Know How to Short Bitcoin
Uhh.... So I read this in the first few pages of invesco's bitcoin ETF.
" In addition to investing in bitcoin futures contracts, the Fund also may obtain exposure to the price movements of bitcoin by investing in exchange-traded options on bitcoin futures contracts as well as swap agreements on bitcoin futures contracts."
So this reads to me when they say swap agreements. Its similar to what he created to short the housing market... So maybe people over-read his comment about not knowing how to short bitcoin.
Can I get a second opinion on this?
